Good Bye Credit Cards

no credit cards

I completed one of my New Years Resolutions today. I just sent out a check for the last of my credit card dept. I have not had a zero balance in twelve years (crap that kinda ages me). I also closed all my accounts so I wouldn’t be tempted to purchase designer jeans or $100 hair cuts that I only give in to when I have credit cards.
It’s amazing how much more independent I feel today then I did yesterday. Now if I could only give up coffee.

Congratulations! I’m really happy for you. I’m slowly trying to claw my way back up from the black hole of credit card debt. I really, really hope to feel that feeling someday soon of sending off the last payment.

  • Instant Vintage says:

That’s awesome, girlie. I have a yo-yo thing going on with mine - pay them off, and somehow, they run back up.

Did you really close them? If you did, you should check the impact it had on your credit score. You can get a ding when you do that.

  • punky says:

I did close them. It shouldn’t effect my credit score. It should just say closed at customers request.
Even if it does I’m not planing on applying for credit any time soon.

  • Amy May says:

Congratulations! That is a great achievement. You should be really proud of yourself.

Good for you! I believe credit cards are from hell. I prefer to use my debit card because at least I know is my money and I don’t owe it to anybody and better yet, not worries about having to pay back.

  • The Stiletto Effect says:

congratulations! i did that once too (but i had only one card) and i felt free

  • punky says:

Yeah, I’m a debit only girl now. Although my wardrobe has definitely taking a hit. I cant even remember the last time I bought clothes from anywhere other then a thrift store.

  • Adiel says:

Hey, congrats! That’s quite a feat. If I was you, I’d be super proud and tooting my own horn all over the place. You’re inspiring me to reach that goal ever more quickly than has been planned.

  • Crystal says:

Congrats on ZERO debt, I hope to have that done soon also..
You should have stuck them in water and frooze them. Closing your accounts is the worst possiable thing you can do other than never paying your balance. It will automatically ding your credit score as closing your accounts. When companies look at your credit they are not looking at your report, they do not see the account was closed by you, they only see that it is closed. I would have kept the accounts as long as they did not have annual fees and just put those damn cards aside… Having them open and open for a long period of time shows that you are able to handle the credit you are given, you may want to see about opening at least one of them again in order to keep your revolving credit in good standing. In the future any new creditors will want to see that you have revolving credit such as a credit card. Mortgages are nice but they want to see the overall picture.

That’s amazing - what a great accomplishment! Best of luck to you with keeping that up for a LOOOOONG time.
I always pay off my credit cards, but know the burden of debt.
Don’t worry about not buying too much…we all spend too much on clothes anyway, don’t we?

I only closed 3, a Bloomingdales, a care card for the vet bills, and a citi card that they already replaced with a better citi card because i wasn’t using it. I would have left hem open, But I moved and was afraid stuff was still being sent to my old house. I left the two cards ive had the longest open with a zero balance.
My day job is a credit manager…so I take my credit score very seriously.
